It is high season. The hotel is generating revenue from walk-in guests — people who made no reservation and simply turned up at the front desk.
"Yes, we have rooms," says the smiling receptionist. And then comes the question: "How do you prefer your room — twin beds or double?"
If your housekeeping room setup was done correctly, you might be lucky enough to have the bed configuration the guest is asking for. But it is peak season — and even with the best preparation, you will not be able to fulfil every guest request 100% of the time.
If the bedding is available, check-in goes smoothly. If not, the housekeeping running begins.
Room 1489 has two single beds. We have a couple — can you make it a double, please? Housekeeping calls the houseman or the room attendants to fetch the double mattress topper, undo the single bed sheet setup, and remake the bed with double bed linen. And so it goes.
One of the daily headaches of Housekeeping Managers and Reception is the constant flow of guest bedding preference requests.
It starts early in the morning with the arrivals list — and it doesn't stop there. Throughout the day, unexpected check-ins arrive requesting a double bed setup or twin beds. Staying guests ask to have their twin beds separated, or converted into a double with a mattress topper. Others complain that their mattress is not thick enough and request an additional topper.
On most days, you will find the housekeeping team constantly juggling to meet each guest's bedding request. And if you are not organised for this before the season begins, prepare yourself — and your team — for a great deal of unnecessary running throughout the day.
It all starts with one simple exercise: a clear inventory of your bed configuration by room type, combined with your available stock — bases, mattresses, toppers, cots, rollaway beds, and spare bedding. Add the lessons learned from the previous season, feed them into your budget, and plan your bed transformations accordingly.
Simple in theory. Not so simple in practice. But if you do not do your homework before the season, prepare yourself for a great deal of avoidable running around. A strategic setup from the start accelerates room preparation, saves time and money, and speeds up the check-in process for your guests.
